Having been held comfortably in the first half, Bristol Rovers had the luxury of being able to make a double change at the break to change the course of the game.
After their performance at Braintree on the previous Tuesday, Jamie Day made just one change bringing in Jamal Fyfield for Joey Taylor.
Andy Monkhouse had the first goal attempt for Rovers but his header from Lee Mansell's free kick sailed harmlessly over.
Steve Mildenhall then had to be alert in the Rovers' goal when Fyfield headed on Day's free kick.
Set pieces looked the most likely way through to goal in the early stages and Joe Healy's positioning was crucial in clearing another Mansell delivery.
A further free kick gave Day the opportunity to make an audacious attempt to curl a free kick around the wall but Mildenhall was around to make a comfortable save.
On forty minutes Matty Taylor netted for the Rovers but he was well offside.
As the half drew to a close, Barney Williams made a vital clearance before Charlie Penny shot wide with a first time effort for Welling.
Rovers made a double change at the break bringing on Nathan Blissett, who has already hurt Welling once this season, and Angelo Balanta.
After goalmouth scrambles at each end, the deadlock was broken when the changes paid dividends. Blissett broke down the left, held off Michael Chambers, then applied an exquisite finish to chip inside the far post.
Lively Taylor then had a shot off target before Welling shot themselves in the foot when Jake Gallagher flew in needlessly in midfield and was sent off.
Kieron St. Aimie replaced Aristide Bassele as Welling converted to a 4-3-2 formation but to little effect.
Taylor bust through and had his shot beaten out by Buchel however the reprieve was short lived.
Once again Taylor broked through only to be brought down by Zach Fagan in the area. Taylor picked himself up and gave Buchel no chance with his spot kick.
Blissett had another shot saved as Welling struggled to contain the Gas,.but some brave defending ensured the Wings were not on the end of a heavy defeat.
Welling United: Buchel, Williams, Fyfield, Day, Fagan, Chambers, Gallagher, Corne, Penny (Hudson 80), Bassele (St. Aimie 63), Healy (Jefford 85). Unused substitutes: Henly, Taylor.
