Once again, Park View Road proved a hard place to visit as Welling United saw off promotion chasing F.C. Halifax Town.
It appeared that the Shaymen had targeted Harry Beautyman as the main danger as he was subject to a number of crude challenges throughout the 90 minutes.
Joe Healy's suspension saw him replaced by Malachi Hudson, and the young wide man put in a performance that will make it difficult to leave him out on Tuesday night when Welling visit Braintree Town.
Benji Buchel, who missed last Saturday's game on international duty, returned to replace Jonathan Henly, despite his clean sheet for Welling seven days earlier.
Twice in the early minutes, Beautyman required treatment for tough challenges as Neil Aspen's team tried to impose themselves.
Adam Smith was lively for the visitors and a corner of his was headed over by Simon Ainge before he made room for himself to fire over from twenty yards.
Sam Corne, again looking tidy in midfield, shot wide when a free kick was only half cleared. He came close again soon after but could not quite reach to guide Hudson's cross on target.
Despite tackles on Beautyman not being punished with a caution, Jamie Day was not so fortunate when mistiming a tackle and from Smith's free kick, Ainge headed directly to Buchel.
Jamal Fyfield, captain for the day, put in another superb display and sent in a shot that was deflected but saved by Matt Glennon.
Another dangerous Smith cross found Richard Peniket but Zach Fagan did well to block his header away at the cost of a corner.
Smith's corner was met by Lois Maynard, but despite Buchel being impeded, he headed wide.
Two goals in the last three minutes before half time gave the spectators plenty to talk about at the break.
Beautyman slung in a deep corner, that Hudson headed back for Aristide Bassele to finish with his head.
Having scored Welling's first ever goal in nearly three and a half games against F.C. Halifax Town, Bassele could have added a second but headed over from Hudson's cross.
That proved costly as the visitors equalised just before half time when Maynard guided a long range header into the top corner.
Four minutes after the break, Charlie Penny marked his second start for the Wings with his first goal for the club. Michael Chambers started a sweeping move that saw Hudson send Fyfield away down the left side. The defender looked up and played in a low cross that Penny finished with a crisp first time shot.
Halifax did not make things any easier for themselves when Matty Pearson followed up a poor tackle by stamping on his England C team-mate Beautyman. Referee Adam Bromley had no option but to dismiss him.
Marc Roberts headed over from Paul Marshall's corner then Maynard headed wide from Roberts' long throw.
Barney Williams picked out Bassele with a long range cross, but the AFC Bournemouth loanee was again off target then Glennon fumbled a Beautyman shot but nobody was able to follow up.
Having come on as a substitute for the hard working Penny, Kieron St. Aimie had a chance to make the game safe but headed wide from another accurate Hudson cross.
As the game headed into injury time, Fyfield was cautioned for delaying a throw in and will now miss Welling's game on Tuesday night.
The three points gained took the Wings out of the bottom three and will give them confidence as they take to the road for two tough away games.
Welling United: Buchel, Williams, Fyfield, Day, Fagan, Chambers, Beautyman, Corne, Penny (St. Aimie 74), Bassele, Hudson. Unused substitutes: Henly, Taylor, Johnson.
