VCD Athletic came off second best in a 2-1 defeat at Billericay Town.
The Vickers played some good football on a poor surface but fell behind in the 10th minute.
Nick Reeves won possession in the area, only for the referee to award a controversial penalty which Richard Hale placed low past keeper Nick Blue.
The remainder of the first half was even with both sides attacking but neither showing a cutting edge.
VCD got on top after the interval, cutting through the Billericay defence with ease on a number of occasions but without adding a finishing touch.
But when they gave the ball away in midfield, they were made to pay as Glenn Poole made it 2-0 with a fine 70th minute strike.
Michael Power reduced the arrears by tucking home in the final minute, but by then it was too little, too late.
VCD are at home to Tonbridge Angels on Saturday (3pm).
