Bromley manager Mark Goldberg was pleased his side were able to put a tough week behind them with a 2-1 victory at Hayes & Yeading United.
The Lillywhites’ dream of reaching the second round was ended by Dartford’s 4-3 win and their sense of deflation was compounded when they were then beaten 1-0 in the league midweek by Hemel Hempstead Town.
But they made a welcome return to winning ways on Saturday by coming from behind to see off Hayes & Yeading, the perfect end to a largely miserable seven days for Goldberg.
The Hayes Lane chief admitted: “It has been a difficult week for us having gone out of the FA Cup the way we did and then going a man down during the week and not being able to come back.
“We needed a win today.”
Bromley found themselves behind once again on Saturday as Ugo Udoji was penalised for grappling at a corner and Pat Cox put Hayes & Yeading 1-0 up before the break from the spot.
However, the Ravens turned the game around within ten minutes of the restart.
Pierre Joseph-Dubois, through on goal, unselfishly squared to Moses Ademola who had the simplest of tap ins to make it all square on 51 minutes.
Then four minutes later, it was Joseph-Dubois himself who found the net, converting a Reece Prestedge cross after a flowing Bromley move down the right.
Despite trailing at the interval, Goldberg felt there were signs that his side could get back into the game.
He explained: “At half-time having gone a goal down with the penalty, I felt we had most of the good inter-play without actually creating too many real scoring opportunities.
“At half-time and I said: ‘You look like you’re beat, but you’re not beat. I need belief in you, you’ve got to go out there and just keep doing what you’ve been doing and something will break for you’.”
And the advice he gave his team at half-time paid dividends as they went in front ten minutes after the break.
“I felt it was coming,” the manager added.
“It was just that final ball wasn’t good enough at times and sometimes we held onto the ball a little bit longer than we should have done.
“To be honest with you, we could have scored four in the second half.
“How we didn’t, I don’t know.
“We had the one-on-one with Moses Ademola and the header at the end with Jordan Robertson, but the most important thing is we got all three points.”
When quizzed on the penalty decision given against Udoji in the first half, Goldberg admitted he had no qualms with the decision.
He explained; “We’d been working on Thursday night about wrestling the opponents and they took it a little too literally.
“It is another lesson to be learned.”
Hayes & Yeading pushed strongly for an equaliser in the last 20 minutes but the Lillywhites’ rearguard stood firm.
And Goldberg, whose side were backed by a vocal travelling contingent, thanked the fans who made the journey to Berkshire to cheer on their side.
“It was great support from the Bromley fans coming all this way,” he said.
“I like the drum and the signing, it really gives us encouragement.
“Thanks to the supporters - please keep it going because it really is like having an extra man on the pitch.”
