CHRIS Powell has admitted there is an offer on the table for one of his players.

Dale Stephens and Chris Solly have both been linked with Valley exits – Stephens with Aston Villa, while West Ham and Bolton have reportedly been fighting it out to sign Chris Solly.

But the Addicks boss confirmed only one of the two stories has any foundation and although he refused to be drawn on which player could be about to move on, it is believed Stephens is the man in question.

“There is on one of the players and there isn’t any truth on one of the others,” Powell said.

“If I do (say which of the two) I feel I would be talking out of turn.

“We’ve got some good players at this club.

“It is silly season I feel with regards to transfers.

“We are going to hear all sorts of mad stories about players going here and there and there is no substance to it.

“There has been contact from one club regarding one of my players.

“At the moment there is no movement.”

And with no deal done yet, Powell admitted he would be more than pleased if nothing were to happen between now and 11pm tomorrow.

“On one hand I would be very happy because I don’t want to lose a good player but on the other there is a chance a deal may be done,” he said.

“But we will see.”

Powell also suggested there are no imminent arrivals on the cards, hinting he may wait to use the loan market to bring fresh faces in.

He added: “I don’t think so but I have got to make sure that if I lose a player I am covered by bringing another one in.

“I don’t want us to be short but we do have the emergency loan window if needs be.”

And the manager flatly rejected reports Charlton had paid up to £500,000 to sign keeper David Button from Spurs earlier this week.

“I’ve brought in David Button for a lot less then what was quoted, that’s for certain,” he said.

“And that makes our goalkeeping area even stronger.

“I am happy with the squad, I don’t want it depleted.”

With this probably one of the most anxious times for clubs across the land desperate to hold on to their key men, Powell joked he wasn’t the only one desperate for the window to slam shut tomorrow night.

“Me and 91 other managers,” he quipped.

“It is a bit of a crazy time.

“There are pros and cons with regards to the transfer window because you should have your business done.

“It is what it is, it is set in stone for everyone so you have to deal with it.

“But you are sitting there thinking you are preparing for a game and you could actually lose a player or two or three before a game.

“Then all your preparation has gone out of the window by 11 o’clock tomorrow night.

“It is a strange scenario but it is the same for everyone.”
