Jackson: We could have had penalty against Tigers

Bradley Pritchard’s 78th minute shot was blocked by Joe Dudgeon and the Addicks claimed it hit the Tigers player’s hand.

Those appeals fell on deaf ears but Jackson felt afterwards the decision could just as easily have gone Charlton’s way.

“I’ve just seen it,” he said.

“It definitely strikes the guy’s hand.

“He doesn’t mean to handball it but I think his hands were raised a little bit so it could definitely have been given.

“But it is a hard one for the referee, it is almost point-blank.

“Pritch has caught it well.

“As I say, he has not meant to handball it but his hands are sort of out of their natural position so I think maybe that could have been a pen.”

Saturday’s result ensured Charlton maintained their unbeaten start to the new season but it could have been very different had keeper Ben Hamer not pulled off a fabulous double save to deny both Jay Simpson and Sone Aluko.

Jackson said: “Ben Hamer has been excellent since the start of the season and he has pulled off another couple of great saves today.

“He kept us in it at the end when they had a couple of good chances, as did we from a couple of set pieces and crosses.

“Their keeper was brave and come and claimed a few and made a couple of good saves as well, so the goalkeepers were probably the best two on the pitch.”

Jackson acknowledges there is a noticeable difference in standard between League One and the Championship.

He explained: “I think the tempo of the games has been quicker.

“The three games we’ve played have sort of been end-to-end and a real sort of high tempo of passing and things like that.

“You are coming up against better players is the main thing really - better players and better squads.

“Leicester for example on Tuesday brought Nugent and King on at half-time.

“They are both top players and Nugent has played for England.

“They’ve got the resources to do that some of the sides in this league so it is going to be like that every week – tough sides but we are more than holding our own at the moment.”

Jackson added: “We looked at the first three fixtures, we knew they were tough.

“I think five points is a decent return.

“Obviously we would like to win our home games but we might only have got a point on Tuesday and we hung in for the win.

“A point today was probably the fair result on the balance of play.

“Neither side probably did quite enough to win it so it is a good point, we remain unbeaten and take confidence.

“We are going to lose games and we are going to win games.

“When you look down the fixture list there is a lot of difficult games – Nottingham Forest next week away are big spending and I think they’re unbeaten so far.

“Straight away it is another tough fixture and then we’ve got another big London derby with our local rivals Crystal Palace, so they don’t come any more difficult.

“But we’ve nothing to fear.

“We’ve got a good squad with a lot of talent and the key is we’ve got a lot of lads who are willing to work hard for each other and that can take you a long way.”
