Charlton 2-1 Leicester City

The Addicks led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from strike duo Bradley Wright-Phillips and Yann Kermorgant.

Substitute Andy King halved the deficit eight minutes into the second half and although Leicester had chances to equalise, the battling Addicks held on to record three points their first half display certainly deserved.

After an impressive display in Saturday’s opening 1-1 draw at Birmingham Jamie Vardy had the first chance of the game for Leicester but his shot was well blocked by Michael Morrison.

Moments later Lloyd Dyer broke through after latching onto a Jermaine Beckford pass, although bizarrely he opted to place his shot yards wide when completely unmarked.

At the other end Foxes keeper Kasper Schmeichel had to be alert to push behind Bradley Pritchard’s low drive at the expense of a corner.

Danny Drinkwater was denied by Hamer’s quick thinking but it was Charlton who took the lead on 18 minutes when Pritchard’s pass picked out Wright-Phillips, whose shot on the turn from the edge of the area flew past Schmeichel and into the bottom corner.

Kermorgant saw his header deflected behind for a corner, from which Pritchard headed straight at Schmeichel.

The Leicester stopper had to put behind Wright-Phillips’ effort from a tight angle inside the six-yard box.

But there wasn’t long to wait for the second goal to arrive and it came in the 33rd minute from former Foxes striker Kermorgant, who fired past Schmeichel from 20 yards.

Kermorgant tried his luck again with a similar effort five minutes before the break but this time the visiting keeper was able to gather.

Vardy was inches away from connecting with Paul Konchesky’s low delivery which flew across the face of goal as Leicester almost grabbed a lifeline to take into the half-time interval.

Johnnie Jackson’s 47th minute free-kick produced a decent save from Schmeichel, who was certainly having a busy evening.

But he and his side found a route back into the game in the 53rd minute when David Nugent’s cross picked out fellow half-time substitute King, who buried a shot past Hamer.

Wright-Phillips almost restored the two-goal cushion but his effort from outside of the box went wide.

Nugent should have equalised on 63 minutes but he fired behind after breaking into the box when unmarked.

Hamer made saves to deny Dyer and King as Leicester began to turn on the pressure, while Anthony Knockaert placed an effort straight at the Charlton keeper as the visitors again went close.

Lawrie Wilson was introduced for Dale Stephens in the 81st minute as Powell made his first change.

Dyer should have scored five minutes from time after being picked out by Knockaert’s excellent pass but he placed his low shot straight at Hamer.

Jackson made way for summer signing Salim Kerkar three ninutes from time and then Jordan Cook came on for Wright-Phillips as the clock ticked towards the regulation 90.

Four minutes of stoppage time were signalled and King almost nicked a point when he headed straight at Hamer but Charlton deservedly held on for their first victory back in the Championship.
