Addicks dumped out of cup by Orient

The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and extra-time but penalty misses from Johnnie Jackson and Lawrie Wilson proved costly as and it was left to Ryan Brunt to convert the decisive kick to send the O’s through.

As expected manager Chris Powell opted to use the tie to give some of his fringe players a run out, deciding not to risk the majority of his preferred starting XI ahead of this weekend’s Championship opener at Birmingham.

There was still a place on the bench for the likes of Jackson, Michael Morrison, Bradley Wright-Phillips, Bradley Pritchard and Chris Solly on the bench.

The remaining two substitutes were keeper John Sullivan and striker Paul Hayes, both linked with moves away from The Valley over the summer.

In the starting line-up there were still starts for first team stalwarts Ben Hamer, Matt Taylor, Scott Wagstaff and Danny Hollands.

There were debuts for Salim Kerkar, Jordan Cook and Wilson and Kerkar almost made a dream start by scoring inside the opening minute but his stinging 25 yard low drive flew wide of the target.

Former Charlton striker Kevin Lisbie saw his seventh minute shot go straight at Hamer while another returning Addick David Mooney was unable to capitalise on a poor clearance by the home keeper two minutes later, placing a 25 yard shot over the bar with Hamer some distance from his line.

Danny Green saw a well-struck 13th minute volley from outside of the area just fly wide and the winger went close again one minute later, producing a save from Ryan Allsop with a shot from 15 yards.

Charlton got their noses in front on 28 minutes when a quick break saw Cook release Wagstaff and his low drive from inside the box took a slight deflection off Orient defender Gary Sawyer on its way to beating Ryan Allsop.

And it could have been two three minutes later when a neat exchange of passes on the edge of the area ended with Green placing a curling shot just wide.

Dean Cox’s free-kick sailed harmlessly over the bar at the other end and there were loud cheers when Mooney’s ambitious long range 39th minute effort followed a similar path.

Hamer was confident enough to just watch on as Jimmy Smith and Cox both had cracks from outside of the box.

But Orient were back on terms in first half stoppage time when Mathieu Baudry rose high to meet Sawyer’s corner and head past a static Hamer.

The visitors were presented with a dream opportunity to take the lead four minutes into the second half when they were awarded a penalty following a foul by Wilson on Mooney.

Mooney stepped up to take the spot kick but his attempt hit the bar and the chance was gone.

Scott Cuthbert glanced a header just wide from a corner while at the other end Lloyd James headed Green’s 59th minute corner off the bar before the danger was scrambled clear.

Leon Cort headed just over from Green’s 64th minute corner after Allsop failed to deal with the delivery.

Powell was sent to the stands by the referee after disputing the award of an Orient free-kick, an incident which is sure to prove costly to the Addicks chief’s wallet.

Green’s 72nd minute free-kick hit the bar and then Taylor fired wide after a good move, while Kerkar came close with a powerful shot that just swerved off target at the last second.

Hamer made a smart save to push behind Cox’s 79th minute shot, while Cedric Evina broke into the Orient box but was unable to pick out a Charlton team-mate with his cross.

Cox saw an 85th minute volley fly just over the bar, while a quick Orient break ended with substitute Ryan Brunt firing straight at Hamer.

Grill drilled a low shot wide in the fifth and final minute of stoppage time as the game headed towards an extra half hour.

Sawyer tested Hamer with a volley but the Charlton keeper was more than a match for the attempt.

Allsop was forced to push behind Kerkar’s 99th minute free-kick, from which Cort headed into the side-netting.

That was to be Kerkar’s last contribution as seconds later he was replaced by Bradley Pritchard, incredibly Charlton’s first change of the game.

There were two more to come at the ‘interval’ in extra-time as Jackson and Wright-Phillips entered for Cook and Smith.

Charlton won a corner early in the second period of extra-time and Jackson whipped it in, only for Taylor to see his header cleared off the line by Sawyer.

But then it was Orient who were denied by a goal-line clearance as Cedric Evina hacked away Brunt’s header after the substitute met Sawyer’s corner.

There was to be no breakthrough and the clock finally ran down until the seemingly inevitable shootout lottery arrived.

Jackson went first and saw his attempt saved before Paul Symes converted.

Wilson hit the and Sawyer scored to make it 2-0.

Green gave Charlton hope when he converted and Ben Chorley’s attempt was saved to make it 2-1.

Wright-Phillips and James both made no mistake to make it 3-2.

Pritchard put the pressure on with a perfect kick but Brunt held his nerve to seal Orient’s win.
