Bromley 0-2 Charlton

Charlton named a young team but there was as expected a place for Danny Hollands, who was making his first pre-season appearance following a summer operation on his toe.

There were several trialists involved for the although only one – 24-year-old French central defender Dorian Dervite – was named in the starting line up.

On the bench were: Olivier Lusamba (19-year-old French striker), Henry Muggeridge (20-year-old right back with Bristol City last year), James Ashton (19-year-old contracted to Chelsea who can play at full back or in midfield), Dean Florence (18-year-old Turkish central midfielder whose most recent club was Norwich) and Fabio Sairava (18-year-old defender from Ryman outfit Merstham).

Bromley included ex-Addicks youngster Bradley Goldberg and returning striker Nic McDonnell on their bench.

Pierre Joseph-Dubois headed behind Mike Jones’ early delivery and Jones did well to create space for himself on six minutes before placing a shot just wide of Dillon Phillips’ post as Bromley started brightly.

Moses Swaibu made a fine challenge to deny Ade Azeez a shot on goal after a delightful through ball from Bover and then Sanchez Ming blocked Michael Smith’s shot.

Marlon Patterson swung in a dangerous looking 20th minute cross from the left which caused some initial panic in the Charlton defence before the assistant raised his flag for offside.

Ming opted to put his 30th minute cross well beyond the reach of everyone in the box after doing well to create the opening.

And Ming caused all sorts of problems for Bover before whipping a much more accurate ball from the right moments later which was fired agonisingly well by Michael Malcolm.

Dervite did well to close down Malcolm after Semi Ajayi’s poor pass was pounced upon by the Bromley striker.

Bover went close two minutes before the break but he should have done better than place his 20 yard shot over the bar after shaking off his marker.

Ashton came on for Callum Harriott at the start of the second half with Bromley making a trio of changes as George Howard, Tony Finn and Goldberg entered the fray in place of Joe Welch, Joseph-Dubois and Aaron Rhule.

Charlton took the lead six minutes into the second half when Michael Malcolm fouled Bradley Jordan just outside of the area.

Bover stepped up to take the free-kick and expertly lifted it over the wall and beyond the reach of the diving Howard into the top corner.

Goldberg’s 54th minute effort was deflected behind and from Malcolm’s corner Liam Harwood headed over the bar.

All of the remaining Charlton substitutes were on by the 64th minute and with Chris Powell watching from the stands, the trialists knew this was their chance to impress.

Jones fired just off target after Dillon Phillips was forced to punch clear Finn’s corner but it was Charlton who doubled their advantage in the 76th minute when Sairava’s through ball put Piggott through on goal and he deftly lifted his shot past the Bromley keeper.

Piggott could have added another five minutes later but he just failed to get on the end of Lusamba’s low cross into the danger zone and then Lusamba then found himself in the clear but he shot over.

Phillips came out to deny Ming in the 90th minute and McDonnell fired wildly over in stoppage time as Bromley came close to a consolation but this was ultimately a useful exercise for the numerous Charlton trialists and fringe players involved.
