CHARLTON secured promotion back to the Championship this afternoon with a 1-0 win at Carlisle.
Sheffield Wednesday’s draw at Colchester was enough to earn the Addicks their third promotion at Brunton Park in the last 50 years.
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the only goal of the game 14 minutes from time when he notched home from a Dale Stephens knock down after a Johnnie Jackson corner.
The Addicks almost opened the scoring on just four minutes when Michael Morrison’s back post header from a Jackson corner looped over everyone except Francois Zoko, who headed the ball off the line.
On 16 minutes Dany N’Guessan went close when he smashed a shot over from six yards after the ball dropped to him following a tangle between Yann Kermorgant and Lubo Michalik.
The hosts had their best chance of the half on 22 minutes after Liam Noble robbed Dale Stephens of possession.
He fed frontman Jordan Cook, who sliced wide left-footed to the right hand side of Ben Hamer’s goal.
Noble came within the width of a post of opening the scoring 10 minutes into the second half as he connected with Cook’s low cross but his shot cannoned off the post and Charlton hacked the danger clear.
Wright-Phillips was put clean though by Kermorgant but Charlton’s leading marksman couldn’t beat Adam Collin.
A 76th minute bullet header from Kermorgant was tipped over by Collin but it was from the resulting corner the decisive moment arrived.
Jackson delivered the ball in and Stepehens headed goal-wards.
His header fell to the feet of Wright-Phillips who poked home from a yard to cue wild celebrations in the away end.
The visitors almost wrapped up the points 10 minutes later, but Kermorgant was foiled by Collin when his curling shot seemed destined for the far corner.
Charlton held out through the four minutes of stoppage time to seal their promotion and on the final whistle there were wild celebrations from the away fans who invaded the pitch to embrace their heroes.
