KENNY Jackett admits he has no idea how many points Millwall will need to secure a place in the play-offs.
Striker Neil Harris told News Shopper after Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Bristol City the Lions would probably need to win at least four of their five remaining games to reach the top six.
But Jackett believes the issue is further complicated by the number of sides still in with a chance of making the end of season lottery.
He said: “Without a crystal ball it is very hard to see but the points total out of the remaining games has to be high because we are playing catch up.
“It isn’t just about the team in sixth place because there are other sides who have the chance to get there as well.
“If it was us and one other, the other team can go on a bad run and you don’t need to do as much but the fact so many teams can still get there means you’ve got to think somebody will go on a run and do it.
“We have to keep in there and keep going for the wins but with five games left we are three points away from the play-offs.
“That’s a good position to be in and an achievement so far. We’ve got to see it as an opportunity.
“We’ve taken four points from six from the two home games and we look forward now to the Coventry match.”
Despite only drawing on Tuesday, Millwall’s case was helped by Leeds’ 2-1 defeat at Derby.
When asked if that result was a bonus, the Lions boss replied: “Maybe and a lot of sides up there will have looked at that.
“It is the beauty of the play-off system because so many sides have chances right until the end and I’m pleased to say Millwall are one of them.”
Next up is this Saturday’s trip to Coventry, a side who all but guaranteed their Championship status with a stunning 3-0 midweek victory at Fratton Park.
Jackett said: “It was a great result for them at Portsmouth.
“It is a big open pitch up there and they look a good footballing team at the moment.
“They have the likes of Marlon King and Gary McSheffrey who have both been regular scorers for them and it looks as if they’ve enjoyed a little bit of a resurgence under caretaker manager Andy Thorn and my old manager from my playing days Steve Harrison.
“Both are very knowledgeable on the game and will be looking to finish the season off well.”
The Millwall manager is also pleased to have more options after several of his injured players returned to the fold in recent games.
He added: “We are pleased to have Jimmy Abdou back.
“We’ve had a very settled team and a minimal amount of injuries but common sense tells you it isn’t going to stay that way.
“With the likes of Jimmy, Josh McQuiod and Darren Purse all coming back from injury it helps to strengthen every department.”
