LIONS manager Kenny Jackett has denied the Championship leaders are on the brink of signing a new striker.

Millwall have been linked with a host of potential forward targets in the last couple of months and even their perfect start to the new season has done nothing to dampen the speculation.

But with just under a fortnight to go until the transfer window closes, Jackett admitted he is no closer to making any signings and added he wasn’t responsible for any idle gossip about likely candidates.

He said: “I can’t really influence the press and who they put in as people we are looking at.

“I’m sure it is the same at every club and people do fly a lot of kites out there.

“We are always looking to improve our squad. My scouts and my chief scout are out there looking at players and it is an ongoing process.

“You never know when you might need to strengthen but have we got somebody on the radar imminently ready to come in now?

“No we haven’t.”

One deal which did go through this week was the decision to extend Darren Carter’s loan move from Preston until January, with the view to a permanent deal being completed when the next window opens if the player impresses.

Jackett explained: “The original loan we had was a month-to-month deal and would have run out perhaps around October, which would have left both clubs high and dry a little bit.

“We’ve liked what we’ve seen so far of him in the first couple of weeks and are comfortable to extend it up until the next window.

“That gives us some sort of commitment to know that he is here through until Christmas and for the player and Preston as well in terms of what they can do to be able to fill that place.”
