PHIL Parkinson says Charlton don’t expect to make any new additions to the squad before the weekend.
The Addicks face Leyton Orient tomorrow evening in a televised London derby at Brisbane Road, their third fixture in less than a week.
Supporters hoping for any transfer deals before then will have to wait a little longer according to the manager, although he confirmed the search is still going strong.
Parkinson said: “If you look at us where we stand at the moment, the bench isn’t strong enough.
“We know from last season you need to be able to change the game from the bench and a lot of games are won and lost with substitutions.
“What we’ve got at the core is good but we need more and more quality. We are working towards that.
“We aren’t that close to anything at the minute. The chairman and myself want to get the weekend out of the way because it has been a busy week with these three games and travelling up to Shrewsbury.”
The Addicks boss added: “We are constantly on the phone discussing things but we want to get Friday night’s game out of the way so we can have the weekend to consolidate and see where we are.
“If you are looking for new signings, ideally what you want are signings who are going to make the starting XI better and then it pushes someone else back down.
“I certainly won’t be signing players in to say to them they are going to be a squad player.
“Obviously we’ve got a budget we are working towards and I more or less know where we are in terms of that budget.
“With the chairman being in sole control now, it is just a case of him sitting down, having a chat with us and looking at the players we are speaking to.
“Obviously he speaks to the club chairman himself if there is a deal to be done.
“We say to the chairman ‘this is how we see this player fitting into the overall structure going forward’.
“Then if he can see that and he thinks it is a good deal for the club, whether it is a free transfer or a small nominal fee, then we can do that but we are working together towards that.”
