MANAGER Phil Parkinson says Charlton fans will see a lot more of Matt Fry this time around.

The versatile defender joined the club on loan last season but didn’t feature at all, aside from being named on the bench for Charlton’s heartbreaking play-off defeat against Swindon.

However, Parky had no hesitation in snapping him again today on a second loan deal, which runs until January 4.

The Charlton boss said: “We’ve brought Matt Fry in following Grant Basey’s departure to Aberdeen.

“He can play left side, centre back and left back and I’m pleased with his arrival because he is a good player I liked.

“Obviously the supporters didn’t get a chance to see him last year because I could only have five loan players and he was the one always left out.

“But if we had got an injury at any point, he would have come straight into the team last year.

“He has done a whole pre-season with West Ham and travelled with their first team to Germany.

“I saw him play twice this pre-season at Bishop’s Stortford and Dagenham & Redbridge yesterday.

“Of course he could probably do with another 90 minutes or so before we throw him in there but he is not far off.”

Parkinson added: “You’ve got to remember when he came last season he was recovering from an injury.

“We did a deal with West Ham then that we didn’t pay anything for him unless he actually played but he is a player I like.

“He is a real competitor, he loves defending and is going to be a good addition to this team.”

Fry is one of two signings made by Charlton today following the capture of Woking keeper Ross Worner, but now Parkinson is turning his attentions to the opposite end of the field as he bids to draft in some fire power.

He added: “We still need players in.

“The squad is not where we want it to be and we need more quality going forward and strength in depth in attacking areas.

“That is what we have got to get and we are working hard towards it but it won’t be before the weekend.”
