MILLWALL striker Gary Alexander has told students at Ravens Wood School in Bromley he is positive the Lions can avenge last year’s League One play-off final defeat when they face Swindon on Saturday.
Alexander scored a wonder goal in last May’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Scunthorpe but will be looking for a more positive result and promotion to the Championship this weekend.
Answering questions from a 350 audience at Ravens Wood’s sports awards evening, he said: “It is every kid’s dream to play and score a Wembley.
“We are confident that we can go one better this year but it’s going to be difficult.
“These types of games are never easy but we believe we are stronger outfit now than last year, so hopefully we can win it.”
Ravens Wood School, which is increasingly becoming renowned as a centre for sports excellence, were celebrating some outstanding performances from the past academic year.
School teams have reached the last 16 in England in the U12, U15 and U18 national rugby League Cups, with both the U12 and U16 teams being crowned south of England champions.
The U18 rugby academy, which is linked to Saracens RFC, reached the last 16 of the National Vase, the cross country team finished ninth in at the English national final and the U12 football team reached the later stages of the National Cup.
Eight students have received representative honours for their country in a variety of sports this year.
Most notable were Jack Doyle, who represented Great Britain at world gymnastics championships, and Sam Walker, who was crowned British boxing champion in the 63 to 66kg category.
In addition, 34 students or school teams have achieved performances of county standard or higher.
Alexander added: “Compared to my old school, the students here have access to fantastic opportunities to achieve through sport.
“The standard of some of the performances is excellent.”
Head of enrichment Rhys Spiers said: “The programme for sport at Ravens Wood now includes more than 700 of our students in 32 different sports.
“The sports department has delivered three national schools titles and produced 22 international athletes in the past 15 years.
“Ravens Wood’s PE staff and sports coaches are extremely ambitious to continue to build on this success.”
