MILLWALL chairman Jeff Burnige was in talks with George Burley over the managerial position at the Den.
At the time of going to press no official announcement had been made, but sources close to the club confirmed Burley was Burnige's number one choice following the Scot's shock departure from Derby last week.
Former Cardiff manager Lennie Lawrence had been in pole position to take the role vacated by Dennis Wise, but Burley's resignation caused a re-think by Burnige.
Burley's track record in English football's second tier is proven, having previously gained promotion with Ipswich and more recently led Derby to the play-off semi-finals.
The fact that he is renowned for an ability to work on a tight budget would also appeal to Burnige.
Burley left Derby amid allegations strongly denied over his private life and turning up to work drunk.
