PHIL Parkinson hailed the success of his Charlton side’s pre-season tune-up, but was far from satisfied by the officials at Bournemouth on Saturday.

After expressing his disappointment at the amount of needlessly strong challenges from Crawley Town two weeks ago, Parky was further distressed by several decisions as the Addicks ended their friendly fixtures with a 2-1 victory on the south coast.

A questionable penalty was awarded to the Cherries – and converted by Brett Pitman – for what looked like a case of ball-to-hand by Therry Racon just before half-time.

This was followed up by two dangerous challenges in the second period, one injuring substitute Chris Solly and the other almost sparking a mass brawl between the two sides.

And Parkinson felt that, friendly or not, the quality of officiating at the Fitness First Stadium was far from acceptable.

He explained: “You quite often find in pre-season the officials are rusty and I will say that the officials today were certainly rusty.

“There was a tackle right in front of us on Deon Burton that we feel should have been dealt with and that started a little bit of a ruck on the field.

“It is the officials’ job is to sort those instances out and ensure it doesn’t escalate and I don’t think they did that.”

Parky added: “It was a very harsh penalty, but it gave us a chance at half-time to say to the lads that we had a setback but we’ve got to respond in the right way because football’s all about that.

“We came out in the second half and were terrific. We dominated the game and should have scored more goals but some of the football we played was very good.

“There were one or two other incidents which I feel the officials should have handled better, but all in all, if Solly comes through then it’s been a decent day.”

Parkinson was confident Solly wouldn’t miss much action, adding: “He’s got a nasty whack on his leg, so we’re just going to look at it and maybe give him an x-ray.

“It doesn’t look that bad but there was always a danger of a crack in the bone.”

Aside from the isolated incidents, Parky was nonetheless pleased to watch his side cap a productive pre-season with another victory and impressive team performance.

He said: “We looked slick on the ball and some of the football we played was very good, but I said at the end that we’ve got to be careful that when we have that much dominance.

“I think we had about 17 shots to their three and we need to make sure we don’t take liberties on the ball in terms of becoming loose.

“There was probably a period in the game where we went away from it slightly, but all in all it was a good performance and a good workout.”

And the boss again had his pick of individual performances to single out for praise, on this occasion new signing Christian Dailly, player of the pre-season Lloyd Sam and the returning Andy Gray.

He said: “I’m pleased for Lloyd as he’s got two goals in pre-season. He’s had a long run without scoring but he’s a very good finisher and those goals will give him confidence to take into the season.

“We need goals from all areas and I’m confident Lloyd can have a season where he contributes.

“Christian’s an experienced player, a talker and a good organiser. I was very pleased with his performance and Miguel’s got better as the pre-season’s gone on.

“Andy’s looked really good in training and it’s a credit to how hard he’s worked. He is a very hard-working player.

“His rehab has gone well and he did well today.

“He worked hard, backed into people, held the ball up well and he and Izale were a good partnership today.”
