KENNY Jackett is hoping to make a decision soon on whether to snap up Plymouth defender Mathias Doumbe.
Doumbe played as a trialist in today’s 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough and the Lions boss will sit down with the player this weekend to discuss further where both parties go from here.
Jackett said: “I thought he came on as the game went on. He hasn’t had many games in pre-season.
“In terms of the pecking order there (Plymouth), he says he has been sub and thinks he has been on the fringe.
“His timing got better as the game went on anyway, which is a good thing.
“He is here on trial for one game and we will see what happens.
“I’ve seen quite a lot of him, so I just wanted to see today how he was going to fit in.
“He is an out and out defender and I think he is pretty solid and reliable. He is 29 years old, he is a man and his timing and defensive cover are probably his strengths. I’ll have to speak to him and his agent.”
Jackett added: “He has got a year left at Plymouth but is available – that’s the situation.
“I really need to discuss it over the weekend with him to see what he is looking for, but he didn’t do himself any harm at all today.
“Right back and right centre half is where he has played so there is something to say he could give some competition when all the big hitters come back as well because you do need a squad throughout.”
The Millwall manager also conceded the situation was further complicated by the on-going matter of Zak Whitbread's future.
He explained: “It very much depends on what Whitbread is going to do because if he is here, that is fine or if he goes and we have that money, that is fine.
“It is quite a difficult situation for a manager to be in because he is in the middle.
“Zak is probably leaving and you would bet on it but maybe we might get to September 1 and there is a really good centre back there and the window is closed.
“With a fit Robinson and Whitbread, it is very difficult to find anyone better than them.
“I’ve had one offer from Peterborough for Zak but that is it, so we will have to see. I haven’t got a crystal ball but I would love the situation resolved obviously.
“In an ideal world, he either goes or he stays and then I know where I am and move on.”
