CHARLTON have postponed a question and answer session with fans fuelling speculation the club is about to be taken over.

Around 300 season ticket holders and fans were due to attend The Valley on Thursday to talk to chairman Richard Murray and plc chairman Derek Chappell as part of an event organised by the fans’ forum.

But the pair were warned by legal advisors that it was not appropriate to attend a public meeting at the current time.

Mr Murray said on the club’s website: “I can't stress enough that the decision to postpone the event is one that has been taken with huge reluctance and regret.

“We would like nothing more than for the event to go ahead as planned, not least because we're well aware of the hard work put in by the fans' forum and Charlton staff to organise things, from dealing with the applications to planning the catering.

“However, our advisors have warned us it would not be appropriate to attend a public meeting, and the current situation means that we would have been unable to answer or contribute to many of the likely main points of discussion, which would have been wholly unsatisfactory.

“It might sound strange, but I hope fans take this as a positive thing, and of course we will rearrange the event the moment we are able to speak more freely.”

A similar question and answer session was cancelled last October after it was revealed that Zabeel Investments had made an offer to take over the Addicks.

The Dubai-based group later pulled out of any deal.

It is rumoured that former Addicks chief executive Peter Varney is preparing to take control within two weeks.
