MILLWALL boss Kenny Jackett hopes Saturday’s impresssive win over Leeds United at The Den will now give the Lions’ supporters the belief his team can be successful this season in their push for promotion.

The Lions’ 3-1 victory came in front of a season’s best crowd of 13,045 and Jackett was delighted his team turned in a strong performance in front of the large attendance.

He said: “It’s nice to play so well on a day when we’re playing the biggest club in the league and our attendance is so high.

“It’s nice to show those people that we’re a good side and for us to show some parts of our potential.

“Hopefully that makes people believe that we can be successful in the future. On such a big day, to put on a big performance is very pleasing.”

However, Millwall did have to come back from 1-0 down after a wonder strike from the former Boca Juniors forward Luciano Becchio handed Leeds the lead with virtually their first attempt on goal.

“It was a great goal by their centre forward,” admitted Jackett. “It came out of nowhere because we were on top.

“But we kept going, our performance level stayed pretty consistent after that and we didn’t wobble.

“We passed the ball very well and, I thought, scored some very good goals.”

Key to Millwall’s victory was Lions hero Neil Harris, who set up David Martin for the first before scoring twice in the second period to seal the points for the home side.

The manager said: “I thought Neil played very well. Goals are crucial and he’s got a key one - the second one – and we got our noses in front.

“I remember being at Watford when he was playing for Cambridge City at the time and sending a scout to watch him.

“I won’t tell you the scout’s name because he said no.

“He was above non-league standard and Millwall took the chance, which was a very shrewd move. He’s been instrumental in a lot of good teams at Millwall and was very good today.”

The win was Millwall’s sixth in their last seven games.

Now sitting third in League One, the club have enjoyed their best start to a season for many years.

Jackett believes this to be crucial, although he isn’t getting carried away just yet.

He explained: “We talked about our start to the season being important.

“It hasn’t happened for the last few years where we’ve been in a little bit of a hole after 10 or 12 games, but I’m pleased to say we’ve got a good points total and put on some good performances which is encouraging for the future.

“We have to not get ahead of ourselves, that’s all it is at the moment.”
