Inconsistent Welling United crashed to a heavy defeat when entertaining Chippenham Town in the Vanarama National League South.

They were three down inside thirteen minutes as the Bluebirds enjoyed a comfortable afternoon, winning at Welling for just the second time in their last eight meetings at Park View Road.

There was no suggestion about what was about to unfold before the eighth minute when Welling gave away possession inside their own half. Tom Owen-Evans nicked it away allowing Harry Parsons to clip it to Leone Gravata and he gave debutant goalkeeper, Jordan Gillmore, no chance from close range.

Three minutes later, the visitors again opened up the Welling back four when Owen-Evans presented Parsons with a simple finish. After two further minutes it looked like it might turn into a rout as Gravata claimed an assist with a square pass to Owen-Evans who slotted home past a shell-shocked Gillmore.

At the other end, Will Henry was a spectator until over half an hour had passed when he had to make a diving save to keep out Martell Taylor-Crossdale’s free kick.

Parsons tried a long distance shot that Gillmore watched go harmlessly wide before Welling manager Rod Stringer made his first substitution, replacing TJ Bramble with Anointed Chukwu just before half time.

Stringer made three more changes before the start of the second half with Elliot Long replacing Charlie Pegrum, Jack Burchell coming on for Zain Walker, and Garrett Kelly for Sam Cornish. That allowed him to change the team’s shape and make them more solid.

Almost immediately after the restart, Welling had a claim for a penalty when Freddie Grant appeared to go through Gene Kennedy from behind as the Wings’ midfielder clipped Chiori Johnson’s low cross beyond the far post.

Henry then made another good save from Taylor-Crossdale’s free kick, and the Wings’ striker again came close with a drive just beyond the far post.

However, with Welling chasing the game they were at risk of being caught on the counter and Parsons managed to get clear before being thwarted by a good save from Gillmore.

Thirteen minutes remained when the visitors scored again from another break when outnumbering the Welling defence. Matt McClure and Owen-Evans exchanged passes before Owen-Evans fired home his second and Chippenham’s fourth.

Although Kennedy and Long both had shots blocked, and Dan Martin sliced wide, Welling were unable to work Henry again, and the Bluebirds leap-frogged them in the league table.
