Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish shared an update on the football club's state of play in an interview with Sky Sports at the Premier League's launch event.

Defender Marc Guehi has been subject to heavy interest from League rivals Newcastle, with the Magpies understood to have made three bids for the England international. However, Parish was keen to point out that the club are nowhere near needing "to make a decision.”

“Nobody has got to the valuation yet. If you want a superstar player you need to pay superstar money.

“He is a player we love a lot, if we start the season with him we will be a better team.  It’s not near the point where we have to make a decision. We will cross those bridges as and when we come to them.

“We love having him at the club and we would love to keep him. If someone else wants to have him they need to make it difficult for us, and at the moment that's not the situation we are in.”

The Palace chairman did admit that Guehi - who has turned down offers of a new contract from the club - would be open to a move away from Selhurst Park if it was right for all parties.

"Marc Guehi is as decent a human being and a footballer as you would hope to meet. We all know the situation. We don't need to be having discussions about it.

“Marc is loyal to Crystal Palace, but of course, he wants to progress his career. If the right opportunity is there and it's right for the club, then it's something he might be interested in, but he is not putting any pressure on the club whatsoever."

Looking ahead to the new season, Parish shared his ambition of taking the club to Europe, while stressing the importance of realism.

"We've only ever finished tenth, so we would love to finish above tenth. We'd love to get this team into Europe, but let's be realistic, every game is so difficult to win points.

“Everyone has strengthened their squads, everyone has improved. So the first important thing is to get a good start and look at the season in chunks rather than trying to make predictions of where you're going to end up.

“Let's get out the traps well, try to have a good start, and then build on that. It's about a good solid start, trying to keep that momentum - and then finish strong.

"We've got to try and keep clear of injuries and get this transfer window behind us so we can have a settled squad and, you know, look at it with positivity but also realism."
