Brighton 0-1 Charton

A SECOND HALF winner from substitute Chris Dickson maintained Charlton's unbeaten pre-season record at Brighton.

Rookie keeper Callum Christie, 17, was handed a surprise debut after Nicky Weaver picked up an injury in the warm-up.

If Christie was expecting a baptism of fire he was to be sorely disappointed, as Charlton's dominance in the first half ensured he didn't have a save to make.

Jonjo Shelvey was pulling all the strings for the visitors in the Charlton midfield, and he also had two good chances to put the Addicks in front.

The youngster's 25-minute free-kick from just outside the area beat the Albion wall and Brighton keeper Michel Kuipers did well to catch his effort.

And three minutes later, Shelvey exchanged passes with Jerome Thomas inside the box before firing at Kuipers.

Thomas, Luke Varney and Andy Gray all had opportunities to open to scoring, but amazingly the game remained goalless at the break.

Varney blazed Charlton's first opportunity of the second half over the bar after good work by Thomas.

Both were replaced, along with Scott Wagstaff, moments later as Lloyd Sam, Dickson and Grant Basey came off the bench.

And it was two of the substitutes who were involved in Charlton's winner on 58 minutes.

Sam's trickery took him past Kerry Mayo on the right and his low cross into the danger zone was cleanly slotted home by Dickson.

Andy Whing should have put Albion back on terms 11 minutes later when, after good link-up play with Nicky Forster, the Seagulls player found himself one on one with Christie but he blasted his effort high over the bar.
