Crystal Palace loannee Jesurun Rak-Sakyi was named Charlton’s Supporters' Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season at the club's end of season awards ceremony on Saturday (April 29).

Rak-Sakyi has scored 15 goals and registered eight assists with the Addicks in the league this season, which saw him win 46% of the supporters' votes for the award.

Rak-Sakyi was also nominated for the EFL Young Player of the Season award, but lost out on that occasion to Plymouth’s Bali Mumba.

Rak-Sakyi’s loan spell at Charlton this season was his first spell away from Crystal Palace, as the 20-year-old was playing for the Palace under-21 team prior to this season.

His goal contributions have helped fire Charlton into tenth in League One, a three-position improvement on the season before.

Rak-Sakyi joined Charlton on August 11, meaning he missed Charlton’s first three games of the season.

But the Palace loannee was straight into the starting line-up the Addicks' next game against Plymouth Argyle, who currently sit top of League One on 98 points, where he scored in a 5-1 victory.

Rak-Sakyi has gone on to play 42 games for Charlton this season, with their last game this term coming against Gillingham on May 7.

He will be hoping he’s done enough to convince the Palace staff, and the new Palace manager, to give him opportunities in pre-season, and potentially in the Premier League.

He has told Charlton that this season was just about getting regular minutes in men’s football, and seeing how he could cope transitioning from the U21’s game, to League One.

He told Charlton that he ‘wanted to play as many games as possible’ but has ended up playing ‘near enough every game this season’.

Whoever the new Palace manager is, Rak-Sakyi will definitely be on his radar. Palace are reportedly in the market for a back-up winger to Michael Olise and a potential replacement for Wilfried Zaha, but they may not have to look much further than Rak-Sakyi.

The youngster has even impressed current Palace manager Roy Hodgson in his short spell back at the club.

Hodgson has said that Rak-Sakyi has handled the step up from U23’s to first team football “really well”, and that his nomination for the EFL young player of the season is great for Rak-Sakyi, “but also great for Crystal Palace”.

Hodgson noted that when he met Rak-Sakyi from his previous time in charge at Crystal Palace that “he was a charming boy” and that “everyone took to him when he came into the first-team squad and went about his business in a professional, quiet way”.

Unfortunately for Rak-Sakyi, Hodgson is unlikely to be the man that he has to impress next year at Palace.

The young winger will have to impress whoever the new man in charge will be, but if he keeps his current form going, he should have no problem in doing so.
