Karlan Grant grabbed a brace against his former club as Charlton were handed their heaviest defeat of the season by relegation rivals Huddersfield Town.
The striker scored either side of substitute Steve Mounié before Juninho Bacuna added gloss to the scoreline in added time at the John Smith's Stadium.
The Addicks' 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Huddersfield means they remain two points above the drop zone, but also face a crucial clash with fellow strugglers Middlesbrough this weekend.
Here are five things we learned...
It was a bad day for Charlton but let's not take too much away from Huddersfield
A tepid first half effort was followed up with an improved second, where the Addicks produced several decent chances to try and bring the game level.
But they were the architects of their own downfall with the two defensive errors before the third and fourth goals arrived in injury time.
Having said that, Huddersfield looked hungry and determined, and perhaps got the goals that their play deserved.
Tactical plans
Huddersfield Town boss Danny Cowley revealed post-match how he looked to "exploit" Erhun Oztumer's position on the right of Lee Bowyer's much-favoured 4-4-2 diamond system.
It worked well as Grant and Harry Toffolo were a constant thorn down that side, regularly finding themselves deep in Charlton's final third and creating chances.
Even after the break, when the visitors improved, Huddersfield continue to find enjoyment there as they went for the jugular.
How ruthless will Bowyer be with his squad after that performance?
It's not hard to read between the lines of Bowyer's post-match comments when he said he had "learnt a lot" from what was his heaviest defeat as a manager.
Never mind how poor the first goal was - saying, "The less I say about that, the better," - he was clearly unhappy with some of his players' performances.
We can only guess who he meant specifically, but the visit of Middlesbrough could provide insight into those who did not meet the mark.
It's about how Charlton react from here
It's been a tough week for the Addicks - losing in heartbreaking fashion at Sheffield Wednesday before getting thrashed in Huddersfield - but it's what you do next that is more important.
Defeat to Boro would be disastrous and dismiss Bowyer's previous suggestion that Charlton were "not in danger" of being relegated, as he said earlier this season.
Nothing is guaranteed at this point, but a solid performance could go a long way between now and the end of the campaign.
Away day blues must end
Charlton's remaining away league trips are - Hull, Cardiff, Brentford, Birmingham and Leeds.
With only one away win since August, which came at Reading during that impressive start to life back in the Championship, it doesn't take much to underline how important points on the road are now.
Who knows, it might come down to the final day of the season (and how climactic would that be?) but Charlton cannot afford to let it get that far. They have the ability to steer away from that.
