Lee Bowyer praised his side’s doggedness after trudging to a 2-1 win over Burton on Tuesday night.
Following their victory over Portsmouth on Saturday by the same scoreline, the Addicks manager admitted his side were tired in victory over Nigel Clough’s men.
First half strikes from Lyle Taylor and Ben Reeves gave Charlton the points in a game they would not have won last season according to Bowyer.
“It was a good dogged performance,” said Bowyer.
“Not every game is going to be pretty.
“Burton are a good side, they came down from the Championship, they’ve got some good players that can hurt you.
Grinded Out a Win
“I thought we dug deep, grinded out a result, and sometimes you have to do that especially after the effort the lads put in on Saturday on a heavy pitch.
“I thought it wasn’t the best of games but these are the ones we didn’t win last season, but we are grinding them out.
“That’s a credit to the lads and the fans, especially second half because they could tell the lads were tired.
“But they got behind us and kept driving them on and helped them get over the line.”
“For me they are great wins when you have to grind them out.”
Bowyer admitted he’s looking forward to getting pitch side after watching from the stands as he served the last of his three-match touchline ban at The Valley.
“It’s a nice view, a better view even but I like the atmosphere and what’s going on down on the touchline,” he said.
