Charlton rejected a bid in excess of £500,000 from Bolton for Josh Magennis on transfer deadline day, News Shopper understands.
Wanderers lost star striker Gary Madine to Cardiff and Magennis was earmarked as a late replacement.
But after their big money bid was turned down by unpopular Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet, the Championship strugglers re-signed Nottingham Forest attacker Zach Clough on loan.
Magennis, 27, has been targeted by some Addicks fans after going 14 games without a goal. The Northern Ireland international has been struggling for form due to the club’s lack of striking options.

But Valley boss Karl Robinson addressed that problem last month by bringing in Sullay Kaikai, Stephy Mavididi and Michal Zyro, who can all play as a number nine.
Nicky Ajose was also recalled from Bury, which will relieve some pressure on Magennis.
Speaking about the transfer deadline day interest in his striker, Robinson said: “I’m not going to say what football club but we turned down a substantial bid [for Magennis].
“Everyone can speculate who that was from but it was real. I didn't feel we could replace that type of player so quickly.”
