Charlton boss Karl Robinson has signed Jake Forster-Caskey three times in his managerial career.
But Forster-Caskey insists that will have no bearing on whether he starts in the Addicks’ League One opener against Bristol Rovers on August 5.
The midfielder had two loan spells with Robinson at MK Dons, before the Liverpudlian brought him to Charlton on a permanent deal in January.
Forster-Caskey, 23, said: “I definitely don't see myself as one of the favourites.
“The manager is very good with his management style. He has his times for jokes, but can be very serious as well.
“I don't think anyone knows if they’ll be playing come the first weekend [of the season] and I’m definitely no different.”
He added: “It’s all to play for. We need to earn our chance to play in this team - it’s a big club.

“We’re privileged to play and when we get the chance we need to take it. There’s another game on Saturday, so whoever is picked to play needs to do well because the season is only around the corner.”
Forster-Caskey has been one of Charlton’s most in-form players in pre-season, netting against Dover and Stevenage.
The former Brighton man also scored in the final two games of the 2016/17 campaign, and he has put his goal-scoring prowess down to Addicks coaches Johnnie Jackson and Lee Bowyer.
Bowyer had a knack for finding the net during his top-flight career, while Jackson was the last central midfielder to hit double figures for Charlton.
Forster-Caskey told News Shopper: “They’re great people to learn from, and they've already helped me.
“Last season, they were on at me about getting in the box and they've been doing it again.
“I think the evidence is there when I’ve got two goals [in pre-season] from a yard out so it’s working at the minute. Hopefully I can carry on doing that.
“I want to score more, that’s one of my aims for the season.”

Charlton play their final pre-season game against Ipswich on Saturday, before welcoming Bristol Rovers to the Valley a week later.
The Addicks have brought in Billy Clarke, Mark Marshall, Tariqe Fosu and Jay Dasilva this summer.
And Forster-Caskey reckons Charlton are in a stronger position than when he arrived in SE7.
He said: “I came in January and I definitely feel like the squad is stronger.
“It helps when everyone gets the pre-season behind them because you can learn from each other and see how everyone plays.
“The gaffer has had time now to put his style across and it’s down to us to do it on the pitch.”
