Charlton bagged their third consecutive pre-season win with a 2-0 victory against Dover on Tuesday evening.

Jake Forster-Caskey’s first-half header and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild’s late goal capped off a promising display.

Dover came close to equalising in the second period, but Charlton held firm. 

Here are five things we learned…

Naby Sarr could stay with the Addicks this season 

Sarr was one of Charlton’s best players on Tuesday night, his long-range passing was sublime. The defender had a tough first season in England, making just 12 league appearances. And after an unsuccessful loan with Red Star Paris, many Addicks fans thought he’d be axed this summer.

However, Sarr has impressed Robinson in pre-season games and training, and the Valley boss has hinted that he would like to keep the Frenchman at the club for the 2017/18 season.

Sarr did his Charlton first-team chances no harm with a fine display in Kent.

Jake Forster-Caskey looks like Charlton’s new box-to-box midfielder 

Forster-Caskey played in the two of Robinson’s 4-2-3-1 formation with Andrew Crofts last night - and the ex-Brighton man brought so much energy to the team. One moment he’d be defending, and the next he’d be charging forward to support Josh Magennis and Billy Clarke. And he was in the right place at the right time to head in Magennis’ cross for the opener.

Charlton really felt the loss of Jordan Cousins last season. The Addicks academy graduate played as a box-to-box midfielder, who at times, carried the team to results. Well, it looks like Charlton have finally found a replacement for their former star in Forster-Caskey. 

Karlan Ahearne-Grant means business

There was so much excitement when Ahearne-Grant burst on to the scene as a 17-year-old in 2014. But he was rushed into the first-team and wasn't ready for the Championship. 

But now, a 19-year-old Ahearne-Grant is playing with a new-found confidence, partly thanks to Addicks boss Karl Robinson, who wants to keep the youngster at the Valley this year. 

He was quiet in the first-half, but when Robinson moved the forward into the number 10 role, he flourished and caused the Dover back-line serious problems. He could be a secret weapon for Charlton in League One.

Andrew Crofts’ experience will be vital 

He was often a scapegoat for the team’s failings last season, however, Crofts could play a valuable role in the months ahead. 

Robinson clearly rates the 33-year-old, who has always been an ever-present in the Liverpudlian’s team. And despite giving the ball away a few times at the Crabble Athletic Ground, he controlled the tempo of the game.

Crofts’ Championship and League One experience and leadership qualities are going to be handy for Robinson this season.

A left-back is needed ASAP 

Johnnie Jackson has been playing in his old position in pre-season out of necessity. Charlton’s only left-back, Lewis Page, is crocked with a hamstring injury until October. 

The Addicks skipper was subbed off after suffering a rib injury against Dover. Once again, it serves as a reminder that Charlton desperately need to sign a left-back. 

Despite impressing in pre-season, Charlton can’t go into the new campaign with youngster Aaron Barnes as the club’s first-choice left-back.
