Defender Morgan Fox acknowledged Charlton got exactly what they deserved from Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Birmingham City – absolutely nothing.

The Addicks were second best from start to finish, although it took until the 82nd minute for Blues substitute Lloyd Dyer to finally settle the game in the home side’s favour.

That was largely down to an inspired display from Charlton keeper Stephen Henderson, who made some vital stops to somehow keep the visitors in the game up until that point.

Fox admitted: “I don’t think we were good enough today.

“We came here wanting to win but the whole game you could tell we were on the back foot.

“I don’t think we had any clear-cut chances really.

“Stephen Henderson has kept us in a few games this season and again he showed it today.

“In the first half he made a very good save early doors.

“He has done well for us but we shouldn’t really be relying on him, I think we should be cutting it out further up the pitch and creating chances of our own.”

Fox has taken full advantage of Rhoys Wiggins’ injury problems to establish himself in the first team this year and the 21-year-old admits it couldn’t really have gone any better from a personal perspective.

He said: “I’m happy with how it has gone so far.

“I just want to finish on a high next week but personally it has been a good season for me.”

Asked about the impact made by current boss Guy Luzon since he succeeded Bob Peeters, Fox added: “I think there has been a massive improvement from where we were.

“We started the season well and then we went through a dark patch over Christmas.

“Guy came in and I think defensively we are more organised behind the ball and we have kept teams out, although unfortunately not today against Birmingham.

“That has been a big improvement.

“I think you’ve got to look to better yourself every season.

“We’ve done that this season compared to last season and we’ve just got to do that again next year.”

It is no secret Charlton have plans to strengthen during the summer but Fox believes the ability is already there within the current ranks to make a challenge in 12 months time.

“I don’t know, I think we’ve got a good squad as it is at the moment,” the youngster said.

“If we can add to that so be it but we’ve just got to turn up next year and look to improve on what we’ve done this year.”

Charlton sign off the campaign this Saturday at home to Bournemouth, although it isn’t clear yet if the Cherries will need to win to secure promotion because they have the chance to do so at home to Bolton this evening.

He said: “I think we need to have a much better performance than we did at Birmingham.

“No disrespect to Birmingham but it could be five or six next week if we turn up like we did today so we will definitely be looking for improvement next week.

“We want to win, we want to stop them going up and stop their party.

“I think that is what we’ve got to play for.

“It will be good to see Yann back at The Valley but like I say we want to go and win so we’ve got to keep him quiet.”
