Charlton head coach Guy Luzon was delighted with his side after the Addicks comfortably defeated promotion-chasing Brentford 3-0 at The Valley.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s 27th minute opener sent Charlton heading into half-time with a 1-0 advantage which was fully deserved.

The hosts’ momentum did not stop after the break, as Igor Vetokele scored his 10th goal of the season on 55 minutes following nice build-up play from Frederic Bulot and Tony Watt.

Bulot then sealed a fantastic victory for Luzon’s men by scoring his first goal for the club with a late injury-time finish to give Charlton their first win since November.

And Luzon was ecstatic with the way his charges had performed after a difficult start to life for the Israeli in the Valley hot-seat.

He said: “We played very well today.

“We moved the ball well, we created chances to score and in defence we were very organised.

“I think we deserved to win. It was not easy with three months without a win.”

Watt was a constant threat throughout and led the line brilliantly with strike partner Vetokele.

And Luzon was really happy with the effort and the way the forward and his team-mates played.

 The boss said: “Tony Watt is a player, that over the summer I fought to bring to Standard Liege.

“It was a great performance from him today.

“All of the players gave their maximum and it wasn’t easy as we lost two players in the first half but they gave everything.”

Luzon added: “We can be proud of the players today because Brentford are a very good team.

“Of course there is relief in the dressing room,

“But we need to continue and our mission is to go to Wigan and show the same performance.”

Keeper Stephen Henderson returned to the side for the first time since November 8, which coincidentally was Charlton’s last victory, and Luzon was pleased with how he and debutant Roger Johnson played.

He said: “Henderson’s quality and confidence is good for the team. We lost him for three months.

“Johnson’s debut was a good performance.

“He felt his ribs in the first half and had to have an injection at the break.

“Despite that he didn’t play one game here, he didn’t show it because he has a lot of character.” 

One downside to today’s victory were injuries sustained by captain Johnnie Jackson and left-back Rhoys Wiggins in the first half, but the head coach admitted it was too early to say how long they might be out for.

He revealed: “I’m not a doctor but it’s a muscle injury and during the week we will see what happened.

“I’m sure we’ll miss them for the next game.”
