Driving to Bournemouth on Saturday there was an air of anticipation as it was unclear what was going to transpire come 3pm. London was dark and full of clouds, but when we arrived in Bournemouth the sun was beaming.
The Lions were heading to the Goldsands Stadium on the back of a good point against south London rivals Charlton. With the games coming thick and fast and certainly not getting any easier, they needed to put an end to what had been a bleak few weeks and I could only hope that Ian Holloway’s team could pull off result against a side pushing for promotion.
The Cherries were in great form and as their prior position of second suggested they are a very good side and a team tipped to be in the top six come May.
Holloway has been described by a few fans as ‘The Tinkerman’ and the day could not have started any better: glorious sunshine and an unnamed team! I wanted to pinch myself. Was this really happening? Only for the second time in a league game this season had the Lions had an unchanged side and the last time was at home against Wolves. Could our own manager inspired by Willy Wonka have found the right ingredients for his everlasting gobstopper? Was today the day?
I am a great believer in omens and with the game being Forde’s 300th game was this really going to be our day? Bournemouth were also without their 11-goal top scorer Callum Wilson, as well as striker Tokelo Rantie.
Sadly, as the 3pm whistle blew, my optimism and hope slowly but surely came crashing down.
The Lions were crucified in the opening half. Lee Martin had to hobble in the opening 10 minutes with an ankle injury and Bournemouth could have been four or five in front, the Lions could not cope with the pace and wave after wave of attacks.
I simply took a deep breath and couldn't believe what I was watching; a fellow reporter said to me: “You do know its Eddies Howe's birthday today and his 300th game today.” I thought, 'That’s it, today is over'. I then looked to my left where the Millwall fans were and despite being 2-0 down and playing so badly they were still in great voice. The press box is sandwiched between the home and away fans and I can’t explain how incredible the atmosphere was – you really had to be there.
The Cherries looked lethal from the outset when, early on, Simon Francis powered a header beyond the far post then Matt Ritchie sent a 30-yard drive agonisingly wide. Yann Kermorgant was the next man to try and break the deadlock when he headed over. It was Steve Cook who eventually opened the scoring with a half-cleared corner and then minutes later Brad Pitman made it 2-0 to the home side.
In recent games the Lions have pulled off incredible comebacks but at half-time on Saturday I thought we were dead and buried. How wrong could I be? A few weeks ago I discussed an email I received at Lions Live about having a hypnotist to make the players think they are 2-0 down... well, the story was written, and the comeback happened against all odds.
Ollie brought on Ricardo Fuller and went three at the back. The Lions came out composed and Bournemouth looked a different side to the promotion chasers that flew out of the traps. The changes had an impact and after a number of chances, Ed Upson reduced the deficit to one. Upson outjumped his marker and smashed the ball into the bottom corner.
By the 87th minute it look as if, despite the turnaround, the Lions were going to leave empty-handed. This was not to be the case and talk about going to the wire! Magaye Gueye, who fired hard and low after Lee Gregory’s shot was deflected, made it 2-2 and Ollie’s men had done it again! Over 90 minutes it was a complete rollercoaster for both sides and I'll take that point.
Following Millwall is never easy but Saturday was unreal and next up is Middlesbrough at home. This is why the championship is the most exciting league to be involved in.
This Thursday's Lions Live will feature goalkeeper David Forde and Neil Harris. I would love to hear your thoughts on the game and how you are feeling going into the Saturday. We will also be seeking your opinions on who you think are Millwall's all-time top three goalkeepers? Who is yours?
If you have a question for our guests or want to air your views email Lionslive@hotmail.co.uk or phone 0207 237 9272. Lions Live will also be giving one lucky listener a chance to present the Lions Live player of the month award to the winning player on pitch side pre-kick-off on Saturday.
