Rhoys Wiggins praised Sheffield Wednesday winger Royston Drenthe’s display following the Addicks’ 1-1 draw against the Owls.
Drenthe, who is on loan from Reading, delivered an impressive first half display and opened the scoring for the Owls in the 27th minute with a terrific long range effort.
But substitute Igor Vetokele equalised for Charlton on 70 minutes, tapping in from close range following good work from Wiggins.
The Dutch international caused all kinds of problems for Wiggins, who admitted Drenthe was one of the best players he has come up against this season.
“He’s a good player,” the Charlton defender said.
“We mentioned before the game that they have got good wingers anyway - we knew it was going to be a tough game.
“It’s always difficult to have that player coming in off the line and getting shots off.
“He got his goal and had a real solid first half.
“We changed it a bit tactically at half-time, that’s why Jordan Cousins came on my side to help double up against him.
“Drenthe played for Real Madrid so he’s no slouch.
“First half he just seemed to be on his game, he was picking up the ball drifting inside and outside and you could not tell what he was going to do.
“He always kept my mind occupied.”
Despite a disappointing first 45 minutes, Bob Peeters’ side improved after the break and Wiggins revealed the Belgian boss was none too pleased at half-time.
The 26-year-old added: “He said that it just wasn’t good enough, the tempo was a bit slow and that he expected a bit more of us and we as players expect more of ourselves.
“We knew we had to come out and perform more.
“It was a disappointing first half, we could have started with a bit more tempo and taken the game more to them.
“We definitely deserved something out of it in the end.”
The left-back played an instrumental part in Charlton’s equaliser by jinking his way past two Sheffield Wednesday players before setting up Vetokele to score.
However, Wiggins put his hands up and confessed that his assist for the striker was originally an effort on goal.
He laughed: “I thought it was a shot but it looked like a good cross, so I’ll say it was a cross.
“I was glad Igor was there because otherwise it would have looked a bit embarrassing.
“We’ve been missing players like that in recent years - we’ve not really had a natural goal scorer.
“Igor is one those players who turns up in the box right place, right time.”
