Charlton defender Richard Wood admitted Leicester City’s supremacy, along with individual errors, were to blame for Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at the Championship table-toppers.
A first half strike from Jamie Vardy was added to in the second period by Danny Drinkwater and David Nugent, moving Leicester eight points clear but leaving the Addicks stuck in the drop zone.
The centre back was involved in the build up to Vardy’s opener when his tackle on Anthony Knockhaert saw the ball rebound into the path of Nugent.
“Leicester were excellent today and at times we didn’t help ourselves,” admitted Wood.
“If you make mistakes against the top teams, you get punished.
“We didn’t start right today, but you can see why they’re top of the league. We’re disappointed, especially after the week we’ve had.”
Charlton are still yet to register back-to-back league wins this season, but the defender was keen to reiterate the importance of putting the Foxes result behind them.
He said: “We’ve got to forget about today and move on quickly.
“We were very focused on today.
“The league is very important and we need to stay in this division.
“We’ve got a lot of important games coming up against the teams around us and they’ve got to be our focus at this point.”
The game was also the third time in a row the youthful duo of Diego Poyet and Jordan Cousins were named together in midfield.
And although not the ideal result, Wood was keen to stress the benefits being involved in games like Saturday’s will give the club’s younger players.
“It’s good experience for them,” said the experienced defender.
“They’ll learn a lot from that and they’ll aspire to be in that sort of top team, like we all do.
“It’s a good game for them and the team to play in, but now we have to move on.”
“They’re getting games under their belt and you can see they have really bright careers ahead of them.
“Now the focus goes on next week, where we’re hoping to get a good result.”
