STEVE Lomas feels lady luck is finally beginning to shine on Millwall after today’s 1-0 victory at Charlton.

The new Lions boss picked up his first win midweek with a 3-1 success over Blackpool and made it back-to-back victories today thanks to Scott McDonald’s deflected first half strike.

Despite reaching a low point seven days ago in a 5-1 home mauling at the hands of Derby, Lomas claimed overall things haven’t been as bad as some people have made out and now his side have at last started to get the rub of the green.

He said: “This will probably be the first Sunday I can have a coffee and go and read the papers.

“There is a long way to go. In this league you see the margins, the first four or five games we didn’t really get much luck, today you could argue we got a little bit of luck with the deflection.

“But I thought the lads earned it with the performance. I thought it was a thoroughly good performance all round.

“After the win and performance on Tuesday we didn’t want to let that go.

“We had great support again with three thousand Millwall fans fully behind us.

“Like I said to the lads after Tuesday when you get that level of commitment and effort and desire, these are knowledgeable fans, they’ll appreciate it.

“You might not win every week but they know you’ve the pride in the shirt and if you give everything on that pitch they’ll back you win, lose or draw.”

Lomas added: “Everybody was on a downer after the Derby game and rightly so, but we went away to Brighton and probably should have won, we went away to Sheffield Wednesday, which we should have won, and I believe we should have beat Huddersfield at home as we created enough chances.

“I understand the negativity around it because of the nature of the way we got beat, but we’ve had two sendings off in the last four games and it doesn’t help.

“It is hard enough to win games with 11 players on the pitch but with 10 it is even harder so I think the lads have shown great character.”

As well as goal scorer McDonald, Lomas was also keen to praise the contributions of Jimmy Abdou and Martyn Woolford.

The manager explained: “Woolford is a consummate professional, he wasn’t in the team at the start of the season but he has gone about it the right way.

“He has worked hard in training to get back in the team and once he has got back in there he wants to say and that’s really what you want as a manager.

“You want players with that commitment and drive.

“We probably slightly asked Scott to play out of position, I wanted him to play on the left today coming in on his right foot and it worked a treat.

“Alright, he got a little bit of luck but I thought he put pressure on the ball, he played a nice little one-two and earned his luck.”

On Abdou, Lomas added: “He is a better player than he is given him credit for and he can pass the ball. I keep hearing people say he can’t pass the ball.

“I watch him in training every day and he can pass the ball.

“He is a fantastic athlete and fully committed so it has never been about not appreciating him.

“He has bided his time, got in the team and like I’ve said to the lads when you are in the team, keep the shirt.

“It is as simple as that there because if you win and you play well, then you will stay in the team.”
