ADDICKS columnist MATIAS GREZ this week argues the case for signing Jon Obika in the summer and moving Ricardo Fuller on from The Valley.

ANOTHER home win and another 90th minute Jon Obika goal.

The Tottenham loanee’s second last-minute winner in as many home games took Chris Powell’s men up to seven Valley wins for the season and means we now have the joint worst home record with five other teams, as opposed to holding that title all to ourselves.

His goal, which came after he replaced Ricardo Fuller, got me thinking about which of the two I would prefer at the club next season.

After much deliberation, I came to the conclusion I would much rather have Obika on the books instead of Fuller.

As much as Fuller has delighted us all with the odd flash of brilliance this season, he has frustrated and infuriated in equal measure.

Too often, in particular when the team were playing especially badly or were in a poor run of form, he would look completely disinterested and more often than not was a liability to have up front, as he constantly gave the ball away without putting up a fight.

This, coupled with him having reportedly the highest wages at the club, seems to outweigh the positives of having Fuller in our team, especially as his moments of magic have become more and more scarce as the season has worn on.

However, if Powell was to recruit somebody young like Obika, who had a hunger and a desire to always play well and better himself, then I feel as though this would be a much greater asset to the club.

Even signing Obika himself is not completely out of the question.

At 22 years old, the striker is no longer a bright, young teenage talent but is getting to a point in his career when he will want to be playing regular football.

Obika will be turning 23 soon after the start of next season, which will currently be his last as a Spurs player having recently signed a new one-year contract.

Somehow I don’t feel as though he’ll want to spend it playing in the reserves.

Whether we get Obika next season or a player of similar age, ability and potential, I’m certain whoever it is will bring more to the team than Fuller has this season.

As much as I’m a fan of the Jamaican’s turns, step-overs and nutmegs, those game-changing moments he was meant to bring to the team on his arrival have sadly been far too fleeting.
