CHARLTON boss Chris Powell praised his side for their persistence following Saturday’s late victory over lowly Wolves.

Having gone all season without a stoppage time goal, the Addicks now have three in their last four matches, including back-to-back Valley winners from Jon Obika.

And Powell was again delighted with the impact of the Spurs loanee, who also netted the winner against Leeds a fortnight ago, as well as a number of other players who he singled out for praise.

News Shopper: Dervite celebrates

The boss said: “What is very good about the players is that even when there is a setback, they keep going.

“Wolves got a goal from nothing, a poor goal for us.

“I wanted a clean sheet at home, as we have been getting them away, but I’ll take that as long as we win.

“My players keep going, Jon (Obika) will come with his fresh legs and he will push himself.

“We got crosses into the danger area and we responded, it was a monumental effort from everyone.”

News Shopper: Andy Hughes before the early injury which forced him off

Powell added: “People like Dorian Dervite have come in alongside my two regular full-backs and Michael Morrison, and he has made a bit of a difference.

“Ben Hamer has responded since he has been out of the team, Andy Hughes and Johnnie Jackson have been superb and young Callum Harriott has just added a bit of sparkle and stardust to the team.

“He will take players on, it won’t always happen for him but as long as we keep faith with that, hopefully he will turn into a really good players for us.

“Bradley Pritchard was out on the right, then he went into the middle and he was a giant.

“I felt the players today really pushed themselves and I’m really proud of them.”

The victory moved the Addicks onto 61 points for the season and also ended their unwanted record of having the fewest home wins and points in the division this season.

Charlton had only won one Valley match since November prior to their 3-2 success against Bolton last month.

But three consecutive home victories have lifted the doom and gloom from SE7 and Powell believes the Addicks had never been too far away from hitting it off in front of the Valley faithful.

News Shopper: Mark Gower came off the bench to replace Hughes

He explained: “When we were losing games it was very close and it was marginal.

“This league is very marginal, trust me.

“Everyone can see it, it’s a point here, a goal that goes in for you late or early on and that’s how this league is.

“You see it week-in, week-out.

“We have started to create more, we have been on the front foot a bit more.

News Shopper: Ben Hamer punches clear

“It’s a good time to do it, it will give our fans a bit of a taster for what we can do in the future.”

Powell added: “It’s a great win for us, again late, given our fans value for money but also knowing that our attitude and desire to go until the very end in trying to win games has always been there.

“It is coming out now and that’s really pleasing for me. I felt the international break really helped us because it was a real tough time before then.

“I felt it gave us some breathing time and thinking time and the players have really responded, my staff and myself have looked at what we could do.

News Shopper: Callum Harriott

“The players have really pushed themselves at a time in the season where a lot of team’s energy levels’ drop, but I won’t allow that to happen and they have been really worked hard and they are looking fit and strong.

“I suppose we wish that there were 10 games to go and not two.”
