CHARLTON manager Chris Powell admitted he would love to experience promotion again after witnessing Cardiff seal their place in the Premier League.

Powell led the Addicks to promotion on April 14 last year at Carlisle and 367 days later Cardiff earned the right to grace England’s top tier in front of the Charlton manager.

And he is eager to rekindle that feeling again as soon as he can.

“It doesn’t happen to too many people, there are 92 league managers and only four of them can win the league,” said Powell.

“Then another seven get promotion and a few of us will have a down day on May 4, on April 27 when they get relegated, so those moments are special.

“I realised how special it was last year in my first full year as a manager when I took the team up.

“Not many do.

“Martin Allen has just got his first promotion on his CV, he has been managing for years so they are special moments for you.

“I’ve had one and I’d love to do it again, everyone sets out to do it but only a select few can experience that feeling each and every year.

“It is something I want to experience again sooner rather than later. “That’s why we are in the league and in football, we want to experience it again.

“The majority of my squad went through it last year and obviously the fans have been through it.

“You go through all emotions as a manager, and especially a supporter, but we’ll be looking to emulate Cardiff in the future for sure.”

The Addicks will be looking for their third consecutive home victory this weekend when they host strugglers Wolves following recent Valley wins over Bolton and Leeds.

Despite the recent up turn in home form, the SE7 club still have the worst home record in the division.

But in the wake of last Saturday’s record breaking 6-0 away win at Barnsley, Powell is looking to continue an unbeaten run which currently stands at five games.

He said of the home form: “It’s only the last two games that we have got results and that has been pleasing. “Our away form is third best in the league apart from two of the top three, which is terrific.

“With goals conceded away from home we are second only behind Leicester, which is just outstanding for us.

“You look at teams with double figures for home wins and think that maybe we should have a few more.

“I want us to play and perform to show people we can play at home and Wolves is a chance for us to do that and also Bristol City.

“Three games to go and I would love us to be unbeaten come full-time on May 4 but we’re going to have to work hard for it.

“Wolves are going to come here on the back of a good win (against Hull).

“But this is our patch and I want us to perform like we did for 70 minutes against Bolton and 96 minutes against Leeds.”

On last Saturday’s record breaking result at Barnsley, Powell added: “I obviously enjoyed the moment with the players are the supporters because it was a special day, a one-off.

“Winning away from home is hard enough.

“We have had some superb results away from home this year - 1-0, 2-1 they’re still worth the same points.

“But 6-0 and a clean sheet - to come away with the best result for the football club ever away from home and under my watch is something special for me.”

“We were lucky enough to break a lot of records last season and we’re still carrying that on this year in a real positive way, so that’s superb for us.

“A lot of our fans who have seen us over the years, for the ones that were there at Oakwell I’m sure they will remember it for a very long time.”
