CHARLTON hit Barnsley for six on Saturday afternoon but manager Chris Powell does not believe it was their best performance under his stewardship.

The Addicks had not won by more than two goals all season, not beaten Barnsley in any of their six previous meetings and not even scored at Oakwell since 1999.

But despite grabbing their first win at Barnsley since 1995 on a recording-breaking afternoon, Powell believes his side have actually played better on other occasions.

“One of the best, I won’t say the best,” is how the Charlton boss described the display.

“I think that is the most we have scored in my tenure.

“Obviously we got five this year against Cardiff and against Preston last year, but to score six on the road, albeit with two sending offs, but we were professional right until the end so proud of them all.

“Six different scorers and Ricardo Fuller got his goal in the end, so it’s up there, most definitely in my top three.

“For us to score six on the road is fantastic.

“We could have scored more, but you don’t get many days like that and I told the players to enjoy it together and we did with the supporters.”

After some recent fears about being sucked into a relegation battle, Charlton now sit closer to the play-offs than the drop zone.

A run of four wins in six matches has all but secured a place in the Championship next season ahead of tomorrow’s trip to leaders Cardiff.

Powell took the opportunity to reel off the names of players who have aided their change in fortunes and finally conceded his team may well be safe.

He said: “Where we are at at the moment shows exactly what these players are capable of.

“We have looked at a lot of aspects and we have got a few players that have come in from nowhere.

“Andy Hughes has, Johnnie Jackson is just scoring goals and they have made a difference.

“Ben Hamer has come back in and earned his clean sheets with the rest of the players.

“We are starting to take our chances now and we are creating and young Callum Harriott, I have to give him a special mention because he excites people.

“He’s learning and learning quickly, he puts crosses in and he worried their right-back on Saturday, no doubt. He’s made a difference for us, like the others.

“We have worked on our shape in and out of possession, we have done that all season but key players are playing with confidence and we’re creating and taking our chances.”
