CHRIS Taylor was left to ponder what might have been after Millwall’s epic FA Cup run ended at the semi-final stage on Saturday.

The Lions knew they were virtually guaranteed European football as well as a final appearance had they defeated Wigan at Wembley.

Instead they found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 defeat, leaving the Lions to concentrate on a battle to beat the drop from the Championship between now and the end of the campaign.

Winger Taylor said: “I’m just gutted we missed out on a big opportunity to get to the final.

“It is a big achievement for the club and all the lads to get as far as we got.

“In the second half we had a good spell where I thought if we get the equaliser I felt we were going to do it.

“But then they caught us on the break late on and it was game over.”

Taylor also accepted his side could have few complaints to find themselves trailing at the break to Shaun Maloney’s 25th minute opener.

But there was a big improvement in the second half before Wigan killed the tie off through Callum McManaman 12 minutes from the end.

“In the first half it took us a while to get going,” admitted Taylor “It may have been the occasion.

“In the second half we got to grips with them a bit more.

“After they scored we played more freely and I thought I played well and caused them a few problems but unfortunately we didn’t get the equaliser when we were on top.”

With Millwall on cup duty, the Lions’ rivals in the scrap to beat the drop largely enjoyed a profitable day in the Championship.

However, Taylor is just glad Millwall’s destiny remains in their own hands, especially as they have matches in hand on all of the other teams in the division.

He said: “Every game is massive now.

“We don’t really want to concentrate on what other people are doing, we need to think about ourselves and get the right results.

“There’s no point worrying about who is winning, we have got to win ourselves and then we will be fine.

“Soccer Saturday was on the coach on the way to the game and you couldn’t help seeing results.

“But the way I think about it is, if we win a game or two we are safe.

“We have got to worry about ourselves and not worry about what other teams are doing in and around us.”

Taylor added: “The manager will pick us up on Monday morning.

“In future we will look back and think it is a very good achievement but the main thing is we stay in the Championship.

“That is where we play week in, week out and that is where we want to be.”

First up is promotion-chasing Watford at The Den tomorrow night, a side wheo suffered a surprise 3-2 reverse at Peterborough on Saturday.

“It is a big game, a bit of a derby.

“They have got aspirations of going up.

“It is two teams who want the points for different reasons.

“If we show the same form that we did in the second half today against Wigan, I don’t think we will be too far away.”
