CHRIS Maguire grabbed a stoppage time winner for Sheffield Wednesday as the Owls came from behind to nick victory at Millwall.
The Lions dominated proceedings and were in front as early as the second minute through Jimmy Abdou .
But the visitors went in level at the break thanks to Miguel Llera’s 40th minute free-kick and they survived a second half onslaught from the hosts to stun The Den into silence right at the end when Maguire netted the decisive goal.
The Lions made the perfect start ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final trip to Wembley by taking the lead with their first attack of the game.
Chris Taylor beat two Wednesday players as he burst into the box and his low cross was tapped home by Abdou from six-yards in the second minute.
Sheffield Wednesday had to wait until the 10th minute to have an effort on goal, Danny Pugh’s 25-yard free-kick flying just over David Forde’s bar.
Chris Kirkland came out to deny Rob Hulse two minutes later, while Shane Lowry saw a long range low drive fly just off target.
Lowry has form for scoring from ourtside of the box but his 25th minute free-kick was comfortably saved by Kirkland.
Forde did well to keep out Steve Howard’s 29th minute shot and former Owl Beevers was unfortunate to head wide from a George Saville corner.
But the Owls were back on terms five minutes before the break when they were awarded a free-kick outside of the box and former Charlton defender Llera stepped up to smash it home, the ball bouncing in front of Forde on its way into the net.
David Prutton saw a 48th minute volley hacked off the line by Lowry and at the other end Jermaine Easter went close with a shot.
James Henry and Shaun Batt were introduced for Saville and Hulse on 56 minutes as Kenny Jackett made a double change.
Easter burst through on goal on the hour but placed a low shot straight at Kirkland before the ball was scrambled behind, with Chris Taylor again testing the Owls keeper from the resultant corner.
Sean St Ledger’s overhead kick was well saved by Kirkland and then Danny Shittu appealed for a penalty for handball, a claim which was ignored by referee Philip Gibbs.
Substitute Jermaine Johnson dragged a low shot just behind as Wednesday launched a quick counter and Jackett made his final change in the 79th minute by throwing on Andy Keogh in place of Easter.
But it was another substitute, Maguire, who won it for the visitors deep into the stoppage time when he voleyed home from a Pugh corner to claim what was arguably an undeserved three points for the visitors.
