CHRIS Taylor scored his third goal of the season to earn Millwall a point at St Andrews and move the Lions further away from the relegation zone.

Millwall fell behind to a Wes Thomas goal just four minutes into the second half.

The 26-year-old had already been denied twice by keeper David Forde, who tipped Thomas’ volley behind for a corner in the fourth minute and managed a superb stop from close range as the forward met Paul Caddis’ cross on the volley just six yards out.

Republic of Ireland international Forde also kept out Nathan Redmond’s free-kick as he managed to parry the effort over the bar and Lions boss Kenny Jackett was impressed.

“Forde made a great save in the first half,” the Den chief said.

“He has had a good season and is in very good form.”

The Lions had their fair share of chances in the first half and would have been in front but for a bizarre 18th minute incident.

Richard Chaplow applied the final touch ahead of Taylor on Liam Fenney’s cross to find the back of the net and it looked as if the Lions had taken the lead, only for the referee to reverse his decision twice and cancel the ‘goal’ for offisde.

Jackett said of the officials: “I think between the four of them they had made four different decisions in about 30 seconds, but I do think they made the right decisions in the end.

“I’ve seen it again and from our own point of view Richard Chaplow) should not have played it as it was going in. It’s an easy thing to say that but he was offside and he did play it.

“It was an unusual process because the linesman flagged and the referee actually gave the goal and overrules him and the fourth official, through his mic, changed his mind somewhere.

“It was an offside goal.

“In the referee’s defence, he did get it right.”

Just before half-time Taylor was brought down inside the penalty area after beating two defenders, only to be booked for diving, a decision which annoyed the Millwall manager.

Jackett said: “I was disappointed with the booking on Chris Taylor as I did think it was a trip just before that and I thought there was contact and he brought him down.

“He didn't give a penalty and it looked to be the wrong decision in my opinion.”

Taylor’s afternoon finally took a turn for the better when he grabbed the equaliser on 70 minutes with a superb finish after being picked out by Rob Hulse to fire past Jack Butland.

Jackett said : “It was a cracking goal, he has been out of late and missed a couple of games.

“We are pleased to have him back because he is a good wide player and he can create and he can score.

“We have been very solid defensively and going forward we are obviously looking to improve all of the time.

“I was pleased with the players anyway going a goal behind away from home to come back and get a point and hit the bar after that.

“l’m sure if I look at the game again I think a draw was a fair result.”

Jackett had made four changes to the starting line up which drew 0-0 with Ipswich Town on Easter Monday, handing starts to Hulse, Shaun St Ledger, Jermaine Easter and Taylor.

Andy Keogh did not travel with the squad due to an illness.

"Keogh was ill, hopefully it will only be a couple of days,” the boss added.

The Lions, with eyes on both the FA Cup semi-final and the league, eventually secured a good point at St Andrews and results elsewhere extended the gap from the final relegation place to five points.

Jackett said: “Since the quarter-final it was danger signals for me as the manager, with everyone winning at the bottom we could quite easily get sucked into a relegation battle.

“Your focus as a club could be on a Wembley appearance, but since the quarter-finals we have played four games and three have been away and we have won two and drawn two.

“The gap from the bottom has changed from four points to five points.

“When the games start to run out, every day the gap doesn't close is a good one.

“We have either one of two games in hand, we have five out of seven at home and we have to capitalise on that.

“The opportunity is there for us to get the points and keep us in the division.”
