JONATHAN Obika’s patience finally paid off when the on loan Tottenham striker grabbed a late dramatic winner against Leeds after coming off the bench.

Obika has made just one start for the Addicks so far since completing a temporary switch from the north London giants and wasn’t even named as a substitute in Tuesday’s battling 0-0 draw at Brighton.

But the 22-year-old was back in the matchday squad for the visit of Leeds and made a huge impression after heading home the stoppage time winner to wrap up back-to-back Saturday victories for Charlton in SE7 for the first time this season.

And manager Chris Powell revealed afterwards Obika had made his case to be involved more often at the club’s training ground just 24 hours earlier.

The boss said: “He knocked on my door yesterday after I named the team and he asked what he needed to do to get in the team.

“I told him in hindsight I really should have unleashed him in one or two games but told him in the remaining six games he would get minutes, whether that’s from the start or coming off the bench.

“I wanted him to make an impact and show people what he was about.

“He had it tough in his first game and he hasn’t had maybe the game time he wanted or what Spurs would have liked."

Powell added: “He likes it here, he’s trained really well and is a good young professional and I think he certainly made that impact today.

“From when he came on he made that run and I think everyone felt here’s someone that could maybe change the game for us and he certainly did that today.

“He deserves that because he has kept going.

“He hasn’t let his levels drop, and that’s a good sign for him and his future career, so I’m really pleased for him and hope he can make a mark again in the remaining five games.”

Charlton had broken the deadlock two minutes after the break through skipper Johnnie Jackson.

Leeds looked to be on their way to securing a share of the spoils thanks to former Valley striker Luke Varney’s 81st minute equaliser before Obika had the final say.

Today’s win puts Charlton 12th in the Championship on 54 points and even more importantly seven above Blackburn Rovers in the final relegation spot.

It caps a perfect seven days for Powell’s men which started with last Saturday’s 3-2 comeback success against Bolton.

The manager said: “I’m really pleased with the whole week. I was ecstatic with the performance by the players today.

“They didn’t deserve to be at 1-1 because I felt our performance was superb.

“The energy levels were very good and t has been a pivotal week.

“To get seven points this week - accumulating six at home and a real gritty, dogged point away at Brighton - we have to do these things to survive because we know we need the points to make sure our status as a Championship club remains.

“I’m really pleased and there’s no better way to win a game than in the final minute.”
