I would like to start by saying how much I have enjoyed having the Olympics in London and how it has really inspired my two young boys to learn about and see sports that they has never heard of before.
What has really upset me is taking my two boys to our local pool in Bexleyheath or Erith and being charged £7, £3.50 per child aged 5 and 6 for a very basic pool which doesn’t offer anything special no slides or whirlpool only half of the children’s pool as at 5 and 6 my children aren’t big enough or good enough swimmers to use the big pool and the other half of the children’s pool is reserved for private swimming lessons.
I would like to know how a company can justify charging children that price for a swim at their local pool.
As a family on a very average income this is not a price that I can afford on a regular basis which is very sad as my boys love going swimming. Our Olympic motto was to inspire a generation but to be able to get children into sport. Parents are being completely ripped off or being completely priced out of being able to afford any sporting activities.
I decided to try and teach my children to swim myself as again lessons are too expensive £6 per child for half an hour lessons and you have to book a term in one go, that is not even reasonable.
Swimming is such an important safety and life skill. It is no wonder that so many children in Bexley are overweight and unskilled at sport. When are the Politian’s actually going to put money into children’s sport?
I have worked out that it would actually be cheaper for me to buy a 10 foot above ground pool and run it throughout the school holidays than taking my boys swimming once a week during the holidays-how can that make sense?
I suppose I am one of the lucky ones to have a garden, if I was one of the many families in the borough who live in a flat I wouldn’t even have that option.
When my children visit their grandparents in Cheshire there local pool charge £1.80 per child at all times members or non-members. It is no wonder that Cheshire is home to many of our Olympic swimmers.
When is Bexley council going to start subsiding sport and stop all the corporate greed ripping of poorer families when during a recession families are struggling to feed their families and put petrol in their cars. What sort of legacy is that!
