AS A resident in Gravesham I have been working closely with the council for the past two years to improve the litter situation.
There is a lack of a properly funded street cleaning service throughout the borough serving all main roads such as the A227 from the town centre to Vigo, the A226 Northfleet to Higham and the villages - not just concentrating on the town centre.
There is a total lack of social responsibility in this borough to help the council clean-up.
What has happened to any sense of social pride?
The more affluent parts such as Meopham are strewn with litter but nobody is prepared to clean-up.
If this attitude is prevalent in these areas of the borough what hope is there for the remainder?
There appears to be a reluctance to issue fines mainly due to the health and safety of the council staff being placed in potentially hazardous position.
I picked up litter on the A227 between Meopham railway bridge to the bend towards Nurstead Court last week and collected seven black sacks of rubbish in two hours.
Dropping litter needs enforcement and this requires resources.
If the council was serious about littering it would be putting up anti-littering signs in key areas.
Information about this can be obtained from the Environmental Campaigns website.
I fear I will be writing the same letters and banging the same campaign drum in 20 years' time.
