DRIVERS HINDERED: If Will Duffay (Drivers Must Get Off Backsides, News Shopper, August 16) thinks drivers are pampered, he obviously does not drive. They are hindered, harassed and obstructed at every turn and overtaxed to boot. Because of the errors of the few - with often tragic consequences - it is overlooked more than 23 million people drive safely and responsibly despite the anti-car measures introduced by various authorities. When parking you have to state how long you'll be there. Any unforeseen delay can result in a penalty out of all proportion to the supposed offence. Gravesend had the most sensible parking policy, though I hear they are about to change. You drive in via a barrier for free but you know it will cost £1 - or whatever - to get out. No more anxious glancing at watches. As for the suggestion able-bodied people should take the bus. Does this include the tradesman with hundred weight of tools or the delivery man with a heavy load? What if the bus doesn't go where you want it to?

BUYING HABITS: It is good supermarkets are starting to provide organically-grown food. However, I would like your readers to look closely to see where these crops are grown. As a pensioner who lived in Kent during the Second World War, I have very strong memories of queueing at the nursery for the first tomatoes, of keeping chickens in the garden and growing our own vegetables. In the light of the trauma with threats to our aircraft and the crisis with oil supplies, we should be looking very closely at our buying habits and how we can support our own food producers. We need to think of our children.

LARK IN THE PARK: I wish to thank all those who were involved via Churches in Sidcup for the wonderful Lark in the Park. I would particularly like to thank all the young folk who always seemed to have such lovely smiles on their faces, together with all the hard work of the organisation for this event. I was a visitor to the Freedom Tent. This was a really good idea and the entertainment provided was second to none. I have met some new friends and some old ones and can only now look forward to next year, when God willing, I will be there again.
