SINCE the introduction of free travel for teenagers, youths are increasingly abusing this compliment and are intent on creating disorder, with a sheer lack of remorse shown for their actions.
As an individual with a hidden disability, I have to rely on public transport to travel to work on a daily basis.
The other evening while waiting for a bus, the inevitable happened.
For my politely declining one youth's hostile demand for a cigarette, I was then verbally and physically assaulted by a number of people, with no provocation from myself.
The youths dragged me away from the bus doors, ripped my clothing and threw me to the to the ground.
Once I managed to board the bus, they forced themselves through its closing doors and continued to verbally threaten me.
Additional to the embarrassment I feel for having been assaulted by youths half my age, the uncertainty as to whether the youths possessed a weapon had also crossed my mind.
Although I have reported this crime to the police, unfortunately we learn of other incidents where society is unable to confidently do the same.
It is obvious certain youths prefer to interpret these benefits of free travel as an opportunity for creating disorder - believing it to be their right to behave in such a manner.
It is not time the Government realises enough is enough; recognise our human rights; and not only considers revoking free travel for youths but also actively resolve the source of this disorder?
Not only should the innocent public have the right to travel the community, without fear of disorderly behaviour, intimidation, physical assault, or verbal abuse, it needs to also be recognised how this behaviour penalises the youths who behave appropriately within society.
