OLD MEMORIES: I agree with Chris Godfrey's letter about the closure of old pubs (Shame Good Pubs Are Having To Close, News Shopper, August 2). I worked as an evening barmaid at the Tiger's Head during the war. I was 18 years old at the time. I am 81 now. I met my husband, who was on survivors' leave from the Navy, in the Tiger's Head. I worked on ammunitions in Lewisham during the day. On my way home from work one day, I got to Bellingham and found the Tiger's Head had suffered a direct hit. The governor, his wife and daughter and customers had been killed. People were running up to me because they thought I had been working in the pub full time and was also dead. It was a time in my life I shall never forget. Memorial stones should be a put up in such places. They could still build around it. I live on my own now. I have five children, 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
