Welcome to the latest Entertainment Rant opinion column which questions the "potentially dangerous" message about sex portrayed in the hugely popular Twilight films. Join the debate by adding your comments.
AS THE vomit-inducing teen vampire/werewolf saga Twilight returns for its third instalment Eclipse, pubescent girls around the world are once again saving themselves for pasty-white pretty boy R-Patz.
With its continuing message of chastity and the virtues of virginity, the films are stuffed with enough sexual tension to make even the most satisfied of viewers tear their hair out with frustration.
The latest movie is no exception and K-Stew is still resisting R-Patz and his gleaming white fangs and despite her shirtless werewolf admirer's best attempts to woo her with his ripped body, our pure heroine is keeping her blouse buttoned up and her cherry unpopped.
But while I can see virtue in teaching youngsters to be responsible about sex, the message of saving yourself before marriage is unbelievably old fashioned and startlingly out of touch with its target audience.
Whether parents like it or not, teenagers will experiment in the bedroom.
Watching Stephanie Meyer's drippy characters delay the dirty act for what seems like eternity – preferring to stare longingly into each other's eyes until one of them blinks or falls asleep - is not only unrealistic, it's potentially dangerous.
Sex is an important part of growing up and having an adult relationship, so rather than telling them not to (the worst thing you can say to a rebellious teen) we should be educating them about how to stay safe.
Perhaps the next film could feature custom-made fang-doms? Or K-Stew could be seen popping to her local GP for a vampire bite-proof pill? If the worse comes to the worst, she could always wear a steel-wool scarf.
