REGARDING Track Span Plan To Clear Clogged Roads (News Shopper, November 9).

The idea to cross the railway line at Petts Wood with a road bridge joining Frankswood Avenue and Petts Wood Road is hardly innovative. In Peter Waymark's A History of Petts Wood, a map provided by Morrell, the estate developer, shows exactly where the bridge was planned back in 1933 and the roads laid out to accommodate it.

As there are only three roads crossing the two-and-a-half miles of railway line between Chislehurst and Orpington stations, the Petts Wood route can't really be called a rat run. Drivers have little choice.

The reason for the congestion in Tudor Way is because of Bromley's insistence that Crofton Lane remains an obstacle course.

With 17 speed bumps this short but crucial through route has to be the most irritating road to drive along, so many people take the Tudor Way alternative.
